As a raw material producer that transformed itself into a battery manufacturer, Ganfeng Lithium started construction of a 5.4 billion yuan ($758.61 million) solid-state battery production base in Chongqing in July 2022. Over the last couple of years, Ganfeng Lithium was one of the companies leading a new trend of vertical integration in China’s lithium battery industry, in which electric battery companies are investing in raw materials, and raw material companies are producing batteries. The company claims that its solid-state battery is independently developed, including high-grade lithium sulfide raw materials for a flexible electrolyte membrane, making the battery more efficient and safe, as well as with a longer life cycle. Ganfeng Lithium is the very first company, however, to announce the commencement of mass production. But CATL has not yet commenced mass production of condensed batteries or solid-state batteries.Ī range of Chinese and foreign companies have for years made pronouncements on solid-state batteries: Volkswagen and Nissan, for example, plan to launch mass production around 2025. In April 2023, CATL, China’s battery king, announced a new type of battery, the condensed battery, which the company claims can reach an energy density of up to 500 Wh/kg. ![]() This is compared to the theoretical threshold of 350 Wh/kg for mainstream lithium-ion batteries that still power almost all electric vehicles (EVs) on the road today, although most of these batteries have an energy density of just over 200 Wh/kg. Up to now, CATL batteries have been sold in 56 countries and regions around the world, with a cumulative load of more than 5 million vehicles. In terms of manufacturing, CATL has built the largest 5G enterprise private network in China, which has now exceeded 5 million square meters. On August 28, Robin Zeng said at the WNEVC 2022 that full-scale electrification also requires strong manufacturing and delivery capabilities as support. CATL revealed that the Kirin battery will be mass-produced and released in 2023. This system integration reaches a global high, the volume utilization rate exceeds 72%, and the energy density can reach 255Wh/kg, realizing a vehicle range of 1,000 km. ![]() On June 23, CATL released its CTP3.0 Kirin battery. Robin Zeng, the chairman of CATL, once said that besides the Kirin battery, CATL is tackling more new batteries, such as all-solid-state batteries, semisolid-state batteries and condensed matter batteries. In short, these batteries are more stable, with greater capacity and faster conduction efficiency. Some experts say that the core of the condensed state battery is the ability to achieve a superfluid state, superconducting state, stability, and superior conduction. Wu Kai, the chief scientist of Chinese battery giant CATL, revealed on August 28 at the 2022 World New Energy Vehicle Congress that the firm plans to launch a new-generation “condensed battery” next year.Ĭondensed state batteries feature high safety, high reliability, and a good life cycle.
